Best Places to Visit in Vietnam: The Complete 2026 Guide

The best places to visit in Vietnam depend on the kind of trip you want. Choose Hanoi, Hue, and Hoi An for history; Sa Pa and Ninh Binh for natural scenery; Da Nang and Phu Quoc for beaches; or Ho Chi Minh City for food, shopping, and nightlife.

With 10 to 14 days, most travelers have a better trip choosing 2 regions instead of trying to cover the whole country. The comparisons below will help you find the places that suit your interests, pace, and travel dates.

You do not need to include every place in one itinerary. Pick one major city, one scenic destination, and one slower stop, then check how much travel is required between them.

North, Central or South?

Pick the region before you pick the places. The north gives you mountains, old cities and overland journeys; the south gives you heat all year, city life, rivers and islands; the centre sits between them with heritage and a coastline. Under a week, stay in one region. With 10 days, take 2. With 14 days you can stretch to all three, but 2 regions still gives you more time in each.

Our North Vietnam vs South Vietnam guide works through the climate, the travel times and what each region is actually for. For dates, check the Vietnam weather by month guide.

Best Cities to Visit in Vietnam

The best cities to visit in Vietnam offer very different experiences. Hanoi is the strongest choice for history and traditional street life, Ho Chi Minh City has the widest range of food and nightlife, Da Nang combines a modern city with the beach, and Hoi An is the easiest place to explore at a slower pace.

Hanoi

Choose Hanoi if you like historic neighborhoods, local food, museums, and days that begin early. The area around Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter is walkable, although traffic becomes intense once you move beyond the center.

Hanoi also works well as the beginning of a northern itinerary. From here, you can continue to Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, or Sa Pa without returning to the airport between every stop.

Ho Chi Minh City

Choose Ho Chi Minh City if you want a larger, busier city with plenty to do after dark. District 1 contains many of the main landmarks, while District 3 has quieter streets, local restaurants, and independent coffee shops.

The city is also the main starting point for visiting the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta, and both fit into one day on the Cu Chi and Mekong Delta day tour. It suits travelers who enjoy busy schedules, varied food, shopping, and nightlife more than quiet sightseeing.

Da Nang

Da Nang is a practical choice for travelers who want a beach without giving up city conveniences. My Khe Beach is close to hotels and restaurants, and the city is well placed for visiting the Marble Mountains and Hoi An.

My Khe runs for about 9 kilometers from the Son Tra area toward Non Nuoc, and different sections suit different travelers. The central section has the widest choice of hotels and services, while the stretches toward either end are generally less built up. Our My Khe Beach guide explains the differences in more detail.

Hoi An

Hoi An suits travelers who prefer a small historic center, evening walks, cafes, local food, and a slower daily schedule. The Old Town contains merchant houses, assembly halls, temples, and narrow streets that are easiest to explore early in the morning.

It is also close enough to Da Nang to combine both places without changing regions. Stay in Hoi An for its old streets and evenings, or stay in Da Nang if the beach and transport connections matter more.

Best Places for History and Culture

Hanoi, Hue, and Hoi An are the strongest combination for travelers interested in Vietnamese history, but each one covers a different period.

Hanoi brings together the Old Quarter, the Temple of Literature, the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, and sites connected to modern Vietnamese history. Hue focuses on the Nguyen dynasty through its Imperial City, royal tombs, pagodas, and traditional cuisine. Travelers based on the central coast can reach it on the Hue Imperial City full day tour from Da Nang.

Hoi An tells a different story. It developed as an international trading port, and its architecture reflects Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, and European influences.

If history is your main priority, begin in Hanoi and continue to Hue and Hoi An. This creates a clear route without repeating the same type of attraction.

Sa Pa or Ninh Binh for Natural Scenery?

Choose Sa Pa for mountain views and guided walks through terraced valleys. Choose Ninh Binh for river trips, limestone scenery, and an easier journey from Hanoi.

Sa Pa requires more travel time, so it works best when you can stay at least 2 nights. The town has a wide range of accommodation, restaurants, and guided routes, while the surrounding valleys provide most of the scenery people come to see. Weather and visibility change considerably by season, so check our best time to visit Sa Pa guide before booking. Travelers who would rather have the valley walks arranged for them can look at the Sapa Authentic Gateway package.

Ninh Binh is easier to include in a short northern itinerary. Boat routes pass between limestone formations and fields, while the surrounding countryside can be explored by bicycle or car. It can be visited as a day trip, for example the Hoa Lu, Trang An and Mua Cave day tour, although an overnight stay gives you more time before and after the busiest visitor hours.

If you enjoy walking and cooler mountain air, choose Sa Pa. If you want natural scenery without adding a long journey to your route, choose Ninh Binh.

Ha Long Bay or the Mekong Delta?

Choose Ha Long Bay for limestone scenery and an overnight cruise. Choose the Mekong Delta for riverside towns, orchards, canals, and a closer look at daily life in southern Vietnam.

Ha Long Bay is easier to combine with Hanoi. A day trip is possible, but staying overnight gives you more time on the water and a quieter morning before many day boats arrive. Travelers who prefer a shorter visit can consider the Ha Long Bay Dolphin Cruise day tour, which runs from Hanoi and returns the same day.

The Mekong Delta is usually combined with Ho Chi Minh City. A day trip covers the most accessible stops, while an overnight stay gives you time to travel beyond the busiest visitor routes.

Neither destination is better in general. Ha Long Bay is the stronger choice for dramatic scenery, while the Mekong Delta offers a more varied look at towns, agriculture, and river transport.

Best Beaches and Islands in Vietnam

The best beach in Vietnam depends on whether you want an island resort or a beach connected to a city. Phu Quoc is easier for a dedicated island holiday, while Da Nang is more convenient for combining beach time with Hoi An and other Central Vietnam attractions.

Destination

Best for

Why choose it

Keep in mind

Phu Quoc

Resort stays and island activities

Direct flights, varied accommodation, beaches, and boat trips

Different parts of the island offer different levels of development

Da Nang

Beach and city combination

A long urban coastline, restaurants, transport, and access to Hoi An

The central section of My Khe becomes busier during popular travel periods

Choose Phu Quoc if you want the island to be the main part of your trip. You can divide your time between the beach, resort facilities, inland attractions, and boat trips to smaller islands.

Choose Da Nang if you want more flexibility. You can spend the morning at the beach, visit the Marble Mountains later in the day, and travel to Hoi An without taking another flight.

Phu Quoc is the more straightforward choice for a resort holiday. Da Nang is better for travelers who want the beach to be one part of a wider sightseeing itinerary. Read our Phu Quoc Island travel guide before choosing where to stay. Travelers who want a day on the water can also consider the Phu Quoc 4 islands snorkeling tour by speedboat.

How to Combine These Places

Do not plan a Vietnam itinerary by counting destinations alone. A route with four nearby places can feel easier than a trip with three stops at opposite ends of the country.

For a northern trip, combine Hanoi with Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay. Our Ninh Binh day trip guide covers what actually fits into a single day from Hanoi. Add Sa Pa only if you have time for at least 2 nights in the mountains.

For a central trip, use Da Nang as the transport hub and divide your time between Hue, Hoi An, and the beach.

For a southern trip, combine Ho Chi Minh City with the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc. This route gives you a city, a rural region, and an island without crossing the entire country.

If you want to travel from north to south, use an open-jaw flight: arrive in Hanoi and depart from Ho Chi Minh City, or travel in the opposite direction. This avoids returning to your starting city solely for the flight home.

How Many Days Do You Need in Vietnam?

With 7 days you can do one region properly. 10 days works for 2 regions, and 14 days stretches to selected highlights in the north, central coast and south.

A simple 10-day itinerary could combine Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, and Da Nang. A southern alternative could include Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta, and Phu Quoc.

With 14 days, you can add another major region, but avoid staying only one night in every destination. 2 or 3 nights in each main stop makes for a more comfortable trip than changing hotels every day. If you would rather have the route arranged for you, our 10-day Vietnam Top Attractions package links Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Da Nang, Phu Quoc, and Saigon.
