After breakfast with your host family, you walk from Ta Phin to Trung Chai: about 4–5 km, or 1.5 to 2 hours at an easy pace. The trail leaves the last wooden houses of Ta Phin, climbs gently through bamboo and along small streams, then opens onto a ridge with the whole valley spread out below. From there it follows terrace edges and village paths down into Trung Chai, where Black Hmong and Red Dao families live side by side.
It's one of the quietest walks around Sapa, far from the busy trails of the Muong Hoa valley. You're more likely to pass buffalo, farmers and children walking home than other trekkers. The terraces change with the seasons: filled with water and mirroring the sky around May, bright green through the summer and golden before the September harvest. There's time to stop, chat with locals and take in the view. The trail comes out on the main road, where the car picks you up at around 11:00 and drives you back to Sapa town, about 30 minutes.
Good to knowTrails here are village paths and terrace edges, with some ups and downs. Lunch on day 2 is not included.
Guide's tipMornings are often misty. Give it an hour and the valley usually opens up.
