Why do cheaper tours stop for shopping?
Many budget tour companies pay their guides and drivers very little. To make up the difference, the tour stops at a shop, and the guide earns a commission on whatever guests buy there. That stop eats into your day, and the pressure to buy can be uncomfortable.
We pay our guides and drivers a fair wage, so there's no shop to visit and no commission to earn. Your day is spent in Ninh Binh, not in a showroom.

The day, hour by hour
07:30On-time pickup in a VIP DCar
Ninh Binh is about 2 hours from Hanoi. With the drive back, you spend around 4 hours on the road today.
That's why we travel in a VIP DCar, with comfortable seats that lean back and max 9 guests on board.
Your guide and driver pick you up in the Old Quarter between 07:30 and 08:00. On the way, your guide tells the story of Hoa Lu, the ancient capital, before your first stop at Wind Bell Pagoda.

Good to knowBring a small daypack. Larger bags stay locked in the van.
Guide's tipEnjoy breakfast at your hotel without worry. Wind Bell Pagoda, our first stop, has free and clean restrooms.
09:45Dia Tang Phi Lai, the serenity of Wind Bell PagodaSomewhere quiet, where the loudest sound is the wind in the bells.
Long before its new name, this was Chua Dung, a pagoda founded under the Ly dynasty around the 11th century at the foot of a pine-covered hill, and later associated with the Truc Lam school of Zen founded by the Tran kings.
War and neglect left it in ruins until restoration began in December 2015 under the Venerable Thich Minh Quang. He chose unfired clay over bronze or wood for the statues, reviving an old Vietnamese spirit of simplicity and authenticity.
Today, clay Buddhas and monks with gentle Vietnamese faces sit among pine trees, lotus ponds and carefully designed paths, while the soft sound of wind bells moves through the temple grounds. Every detail feels intentional — reflecting a philosophy of integrity: harmony with nature, simplicity without excess, and beauty through restraint.
The main hall honours Dia Tang (Ksitigarbha), the bodhisattva who vowed to guide every lost soul. Your guide gives you time to wander in silence first, listen to the bells and take in the stillness, then shares the full story on the drive to Hoa Lu.

Good to knowNo entry ticket; donations are welcome. Cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes in the shrine halls and keep voices low. Formerly in Ha Nam, the pagoda now lies within Ninh Binh province.
Guide's tipIn the white-pebble courtyard, step on the dark stones, not the pebbles. Its 12 circles stand for the 12 links of dependent origination.
11:00Hoa Lu, Vietnam's first imperial capitalThe limestone-walled valley where Vietnam's first emperor ruled.
Few stories in Vietnamese history are as extraordinary as Queen Duong Van Nga — a woman who became the wife of two emperors from two different dynasties. After the death of King Dinh Tien Hoang, she later became the wife of Le Dai Hanh, helping secure the transition between the Dinh and Early Le dynasties.
In 968, Dinh Bo Linh ended the chaos of the Twelve Warlords, crowned himself Dinh Tien Hoang and named the country Dai Co Viet, ruling from this limestone-walled valley. After his death, Le Hoan took the throne as Le Dai Hanh and famously defeated the Song invasion in 981. The royal court remained here until 1010, when Ly Thai To moved the capital to Thang Long, today's Hanoi.
Today, you visit the temples of both kings, with their carved wooden halls rebuilt in the 17th century. King Dinh's shrine also honours his three sons; King Le's honours Queen Duong Van Nga, remembered as the woman at the heart of two dynastic transitions.
In front of King Dinh's temple lies a remarkable dragon bed carved from a single two-tonne stone slab, recognised as a National Treasure since 2017.

Good to knowTicket included. Stone thresholds and uneven paving; flat shoes help. Both temples are active places of worship.
Guide's tipLook closely at the stone dragon bed: locals say the dragon shows most clearly after rain, when the stone is wet.
12:00A private lunch, made for you90 minutes in a private dining area. Food planned around you.
Lunch on this tour is planned around you, not around a buffet. Before the tour, our operations team contacts you. They ask what you eat, what you don't eat and if you have any allergies. Vegetarian, no pork, no seafood, a nut allergy or a child who can't eat spicy food: just tell us. We write it all down and send your notes to the kitchen before you arrive.
On the day, you eat in a private dining area, away from big tour groups. Families get their own table, so you can talk and eat at your own pace. Your dishes come to your table, not from a buffet line. The menu can include Ninh Binh favorites like mountain goat and com chay, the region's golden crispy rice. You have 90 minutes, so there is no need to rush.

Good to knowDrinks not included. Need halal or another certified meal? Please book a private tour for the best experience.
Guide's tipEat the com chay while it still crackles, dipped into the sauce. That's how locals do it.
13:30Cycling around Tam Coc to Thai Vi TempleAn easy 6 km ride past the Ngo Dong River and green rice fields.
After lunch, you ride a bike on a gentle loop around Tam Coc. The road follows the Ngo Dong River, then runs between green rice fields and limestone cliffs.
Your ride ends at Thai Vi Temple, an ancient temple from the 13th century that honours the Tran kings. The whole route is about 6 km and takes around 30 minutes. It is flat and quiet, so it feels easy for most guests. From here, you continue to the afternoon option you chose when booking.

Good to knowThe ride is short and flat. Wear comfortable shoes and bring sunscreen.
Guide's tipWear your Meetup conical hat on the ride: the road through the rice fields has little shade.
- Embroidery Workshop + Van Long Nature Reserve boat rideShown below
- Trang An boat ride + Mua Cave viewpointThe Trang An boat ride takes longer, so this route doesn't include the Embroidery Workshop.Shown below
- Embroidery Workshop + Tam Coc boat rideShown below
Routes 1 & 314:00Embroidery workshopSeven centuries of needlework, and 90 minutes to try it yourself.
Van Lam, the village at the foot of the Tam Coc cliffs, has embroidered for more than 700 years. Legend credits Tran Thi Dung, wife of the Tran court's grand chancellor Tran Thu Do, who had palace women teach the villagers their needlework in the 13th century.
Their stitches once went into royal robes and temple hangings; in 2024 the craft was recognised as National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
A local embroiderer shows you how a design is traced onto fabric and walks you through the core stitches, then stays at your elbow while you finish a small motif of your own. You take it home in a Meetup cloth bag.

Good to knowToday, embroidery is only seasonal work for these artisans. The rest of the year, they take other jobs to make a living. Your visit gives them one more reason to keep the craft going.
Guide's tipWant to wear your work home? Bring your own shirt and stitch your motif right onto it.
Route 115:30Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve, nature at its most untouchedThe place that has changed the least, saved for the softest light of the day.
Why Van Long? Because the best place to end a day is often the place that has changed the least. Van Long is still very natural. There are no big tourist buildings, no concrete walkways and no rows of souvenir shops. There are also far fewer visitors. Here, the scenery still feels wild, quiet and fully its own.
We come here late in the afternoon on purpose. The light gets softer and the limestone mountains turn gold. Small boats glide almost silently across the still water, and the wetlands reflect the sky and cliffs around you. In the winter months, the sun sets while you are still on the water. For us, Van Long is not just another stop. It is the moment to slow down and enjoy Vietnam without the crowds.
Van Long covers about 2,700 hectares of limestone cliffs, wetlands and reed beds. In 2019, it became Vietnam's ninth Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. In 2020, it was added to the IUCN Green List, a sign of how well its nature is protected. We save Van Long for last, because this is when the reserve feels most alive and most peaceful.

Good to knowBoat ticket included. Langur sightings are never guaranteed, so binoculars or a zoom lens will help. From October to February, the sun sets around 17:05–17:30.
Guide's tipLook up at the cliff ledges, not down at the water. Langurs sit high on the rock and are most active in the late afternoon.
Route 214:00Trang An by rowboat, through caves and templesDuck your head: some caves are barely taller than a seated rower.
In 2014 UNESCO inscribed the Trang An Landscape Complex as Vietnam's first mixed natural and cultural World Heritage Site, and the first in Southeast Asia. Archaeologists have traced human life in its caves back more than 30,000 years.
A local rower takes you through flooded valleys, into water caves that run straight under the mountains, and past small temples on islands in the lagoons.
Hollywood came for the same scenery: Kong: Skull Island (2017) was filmed among Ninh Binh's karsts. The loop takes about 2.5 hours, with a short stop at a temple along the way.

Good to knowBoat ticket included. Life jackets provided. There's little shade on the water, so bring sunscreen; your Meetup conical hat earns its keep here.
Guide's tipAsk for the front seat; you get the first view out of every cave.
Route 216:30Mua Cave, the view over Tam CocClimb 500 steps for the view on every Ninh Binh postcard.
Straight after the boat, we drive about 10 minutes to Mua Cave. A stone stairway of around 500 steps climbs the limestone ridge to a small shrine and a stone dragon on the summit.
From the top you look down over the Ngo Dong River winding through Tam Coc's rice fields and karsts.
We arrive late in the afternoon, when the light is softest and the midday crowds have gone. Allow about 45 minutes to climb, take photos and come back down, before the drive to Hanoi at 17:30.

Good to knowMua Cave ticket included. The steps are steep and uneven in places; wear shoes with good grip. Not recommended for guests with knee or heart problems: you can wait at the café at the foot of the hill instead.
Guide's tipKeep a bottle of water with you: there's little shade on the steps, and the view at the top is worth lingering over.
Route 315:30Tam Coc by rowboat, through three cavesThe stretch of river locals call “Ha Long Bay on land”.
The Ngo Dong River winds between rice paddies and sheer karst walls, then runs straight through three caves: Hang Ca, about 127 m long, then the shorter Hang Hai and Hang Ba.
Many rowers here push the oars with their feet, a local technique that keeps their hands free and their backs rested on the long pull home.
In late May and early June the fields turn gold just before harvest; the rest of the year they are a patchwork of green water and young rice. The ride takes about 1.5 hours, timed for the soft late-afternoon light on the cliffs.

Good to knowBoat ticket included. Near the third cave, vendors in boats sell drinks and snacks; a smile and “no, thank you” is enough. Tipping your rower is customary but never required.
Guide's tipKeep your camera ready on the way back: the sun is behind you and the cliffs glow.
About two hours on the road after leaving Ninh Binh at 17:30.

“I booked a Ha Long Bay cruise tour for my family through Meetup Travel, and honestly, it was a 100/10 experience! I absolutely loved how well they communicated with me and helped find the best options to fit my needs. Everyone was so professional, thoughtful, and accommodating! I had the chance to meet Xeon in person, and he was such a sweetheart! 🥹 He’s enthusiastic, friendly, patient, and incredibly professional. He even took the time to help us plan our overall trip around Vietnam, despite the fact that I only booked the cruise through them and not the entire tour. He was always happy to help and never made me feel like I was asking for too much. I also had Hazel supporting me throughout the process. Both Xeon and Hazel checked in from time to time to make sure the paperwork went smoothly and that everything was going well with my family and our trip. I genuinely appreciate how much they care. You can really tell that they love what they do and truly want their customers to have the best experience possible. ❤️ The cruise itself was amazing, and I would absolutely love to come back! Everything was well organized, the staff were friendly and professional, and there was even nighttime entertainment, including a traditional clothing show and karaoke. And the food? SO GOOD! 🤣 Even now, my mom is still wondering how they managed to make the shrimp taste THAT good! I would definitely recommend Meetup Travel to foreign tourists visiting Vietnam. Traveling in a new country can sometimes be stressful, especially if you don’t speak Vietnamese, but having a team like this makes such a huge difference. They help take away so much of the stress and make you feel cared for throughout the journey. A huge thank-you to Xeon, Hazel, and the entire team for making this such a memorable experience for my family. You made our trip extra special, and we’re so grateful! If you’re planning a trip to Vietnam, definitely give Meetup Travel a try. You won’t regret it! 🥰✨”

“We just returned from a wonderful 10-day trip across Vietnam with Meetup Travel, covering Hanoi, Sapa, Ninh Binh, Da Nang and Hoi An. From the start, Yvonne and Danny understood our requirements really well, including our vegetarian and Jain dietary needs, and planned everything meticulously at the right price. Once the trip began, their team (Krystal, Chloe, Stella, Kim and others) was always there to make adjustments and resolve last-minute issues quickly. They genuinely cared and even arranged some lovely surprises for us along the way. The tour guides were amazing, and our guide in Sapa, Ms May Lan, was exceptional. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Vietnam and would highly recommend Meetup Travel to anyone planning a visit.”

What most guests ask
Where do you pick us up?
From your hotel in Hanoi's Old Quarter between 07:30 and 08:00. Your guide confirms the exact time by WhatsApp the evening before.
Is the price the same for all three options?
Almost. It's US$64 per adult for the Van Long and Trang An routes, and US$68 for the Tam Coc route. Every price includes the Hoa Lu ticket, your boat trip and lunch. The Van Long and Tam Coc routes add the embroidery workshop; the Trang An route adds the Mua Cave ticket.
Which afternoon option should I choose?
Choose Van Long if you'd rather have the quietest water, a chance of spotting rare langurs, and the embroidery workshop. Choose Trang An for the UNESCO caves and island temples, the longest time on the water, and the climb up Mua Cave for the view over Tam Coc. Choose Tam Coc for rice-field scenery and foot-rowers, plus the workshop.
Is Wind Bell Pagoda the same as Bai Dinh pagoda?
No. Bai Dinh is the vast modern temple complex most big-group tours stop at, with record-breaking bronze statues and crowds to match. Dia Tang Phi Lai (Wind Bell Pagoda) is a small, ancient pagoda site in the hills to the north, restored with clay statues and kept deliberately quiet. It's a completely different mood.
Are there any shopping stops?
No. If we stop on the highway, it's only for the restroom, and nobody will walk you through a showroom.
What if it rains?
Boats run in light rain, and we bring ponchos. If the authorities close the boat routes because of storms or floods, we move your date for free or refund you in full.
Is it suitable for children and older travellers?
Yes, as long as they're comfortable with a 12-hour day. There's no long climb, the lunch break lasts two hours, and every guest has their own seat in the van.
Can you handle vegetarian or allergy diets?
Yes. Tell us when you book and the kitchen prepares a separate set menu.
