Vietnam Family Tour - 15 Days

AFTERNOON: HO CHI MINH CITY FAMILY ARRIVAL

The Vietnam Family and Leisure Tour begins in Ho Chi Minh City - a city that works well for family travel with its street-level energy, easy food variety, and the mix of colonial architecture and modern development that gives children a compelling first impression of Vietnamese urban life.

• Arrive at Tan Son Nhat Airport and transfer to the District 1 hotel (30-45 minutes): District 1 is the safest and most walkable area for family groups with the pedestrianised Nguyen Hue Boulevard running from the City Hall to the Saigon River waterfront
• First evening: Nguyen Hue Walking Street for the family-friendly street food and the Ben Thanh Market night market adjacent to the south end of the street; the rooftop bars of the Bitexco Tower skip list if families with young children prefer the riverside promenade walk instead
• Hotel facilities and rest: the District 1 hotels used by Meetup Travel all have pools with family areas suitable for the first evening recovery after the international flights

Pre-dawn boat departure to Cai Rang Floating Market - the largest floating market in the Mekong Delta, with hundreds of wooden boats trading fruit, vegetables, and produce boat-to-boat before sunrise. Return to Can Tho for breakfast. Transfer to Can Tho airport or Ho Chi Minh City for the flight to Nha Trang (Cam Ranh Airport). Check in to your beachfront hotel. Nha Trang Beach (Tran Phu, 6km) runs along the seafront with calm water and lifeguards 6am–6pm.

Full-day boat cruise through Nha Trang Bay covering three islands: Mun Island (marine protected area with coral reef snorkelling in clear water), Mot Island, and Tam Island. Lunch served on the boat. Afternoon swimming stop at anchor in a sheltered bay. Return to Nha Trang town by late afternoon.

FULL DAY: NHA TRANG BEACH FREE DAY

Day 6 is a full free day at Nha Trang with no scheduled activities - the Nha Trang beach promenade and the inner bay islands are among the most family-friendly coastal settings in Vietnam.

• Morning: Nha Trang Beach (Tran Phu, 6km): the urban beach faces east giving morning sun on the sand and afternoon shade from the hotels; the beach has lifeguards from 6am-6pm at the main sections opposite the resort strip
• Vinpearl Land (Hon Tre Island): Vietnam's largest theme park complex is 15 minutes from the mainland via cable car (3.3km, world's longest over-sea cable car); the park has the waterpark, aquarium, roller coasters, and the safari section in a single all-day admission; best option for families with children aged 5-15
• Afternoon alternative: Mud Bath (Thap Ba, 15km north): the natural hot spring mud pools at 35-40C are a uniquely Vietnamese wellness experience popular with both adults and children; the volcanic mineral mud is reputed to be beneficial for skin and the experience of submerging in warm mud is reliably memorable for children

MORNING: NHA TRANG - HOI AN (FLIGHT)

Day 7 transfers from the beach resort to Hoi An for the central coast section of the Family and Leisure Tour.

• Transfer to Cam Ranh Airport (CXR, 35km south of Nha Trang): the Nha Trang-Da Nang flight (1 hour) arrives at Da Nang (DAD) for the 30km road transfer south to Hoi An
• Arrive Hoi An by noon: the Ancient Town is the most accessible UNESCO World Heritage site in Vietnam for family groups due to the flat walkable layout and the short distances between highlights (the entire Ancient Town is 1.5km end-to-end)
• Afternoon: first Hoi An walk along the Thu Bon River promenade and the Ancient Town inner streets; the evening lantern floating at the river (releasing paper lanterns onto the Thu Bon after the street lights dim at 7pm) is the most popular family activity in Hoi An on the first evening

FULL DAY: HOI AN FAMILY ACTIVITIES

Day 8 is the free day in Hoi An with a range of family-friendly activities available around the Ancient Town area.

• Morning: Hoi An Cooking Class at one of the riverside cooking schools: the class format uses fresh ingredients from the market (visit included), 3-4 dishes, and family seating that works well for children aged 8 and up; the cao lau noodle dish made with the Hoi An well water is the signature preparation of every Hoi An cooking class
• Tra Que Vegetable Village (4km from town): the organic herb farming village on the Thu Bon River tributary where families can try the morning gardening activities (composting, irrigation, and planting with the farmers) before the cooking class return transfer
• Afternoon: Cua Dai Beach (5km east of town): the beach facing northeast with calm water and the gentlest surf on the central coast; the beach cafes on the northern end are family-run operations suitable for the afternoon with children playing in the sand

DAY TRIP: HOI AN - HUE IMPERIAL CITY

Day 9 makes the 130km day trip from Hoi An to Hue for the Imperial City and the royal tomb circuit before returning to Hoi An for the night.

• Transfer Hoi An to Hue via Hai Van Pass (130km, 2.5 hours): the coastal road approach through Lang Co and over the pass is the most dramatic road journey of the central coast section; children respond strongly to the pass viewpoint and the scale of the bay panoramas from the 496m summit
• Hue Imperial City (Citadel, 1803-1821): the UNESCO-listed royal capital of the Nguyen Dynasty; the Forbidden Purple City at the centre was the exclusive residence of the Emperor and his immediate household; the 6m-high citadel walls run 10km around the outer moat perimeter; the morning boat trip on the Perfume River from the Thien Mu Pagoda (1601) to the citadel approach is the family-friendly entry point to the Hue heritage circuit
• Return to Hoi An via Hai Van Pass arriving by evening

FULL DAY: HUE ROYAL TOMB CIRCUIT

Day 10 explores the Nguyen Dynasty royal tombs south of Hue city - the most architecturally diverse funeral monument circuit in Southeast Asia, with each of the 7 surviving tombs built to the personal aesthetic of the individual emperor.

• Tu Duc Tomb (1864): the most romantic of the royal tombs - the emperor's personal retreat built during his own lifetime on a 12-hectare garden estate; the pavilions, lakes, frangipani allees, and the lychee orchard were all designed by Tu Duc himself for afternoon writing and poetry
• Minh Mang Tomb (1840): the most formally structured tomb on a central axis design borrowed from the Chinese imperial tomb tradition but adapted to Vietnamese proportions and the Huong River landscape setting
• Khai Dinh Tomb (1925): the most visually dramatic tomb - a hybrid French-Vietnamese structure on a hillside above the valley with the interior covered floor-to-ceiling in broken ceramic mosaic (mosaique en miettes) using smashed European porcelain imported from France and China

MORNING: HUE - THIEN MU PAGODA - AIRPORT

Day 11 closes the central Vietnam section with a final Hue morning before the Hue-Hanoi flight.

• Thien Mu Pagoda (1601, 7-storey Phuoc Duyen Tower): the most photographed landmark of Hue on the west bank of the Perfume River; the 7-storey octagonal tower (21m) was built by Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu and is dedicated to the heavenly woman who appeared on the hill; the Austin sedan used by the self-immolating monk Thich Quang Duc in Saigon in 1963 is preserved in the pagoda motor court
• Transfer to Phu Bai Airport (HUI, 15km south): Hue-Hanoi flight (1h20 minutes); arrive Hanoi Noi Bai Airport for the northern capital days

FULL DAY: HANOI FREE DAY - OLD QUARTER & MUSEUMS

Day 12 is the free day in Hanoi for the family to explore the Old Quarter and the lake district at their own pace.

• Morning: Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (Tay Ho District, 15 minutes from the Old Quarter): the most child-accessible museum in Hanoi with the outdoor exhibition of full-scale minority longhouses and the hands-on cultural activities running on weekends (top-spinning, stilt-walking, and traditional games of the 54 ethnic groups)
• Old Quarter walking lunch: the 36 guild streets around Hoan Kiem Lake for the iconic Hanoi food experiences without a specific restaurant recommendation: bun cha (grilled pork patties and noodles in broth), cha ca La Vong (turmeric-marinated catfish), and the egg coffee (ca phe trung) that originated in Hanoi in the 1940s
• Afternoon: Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple via the Huc Bridge (The Huc = Sunlight Bridge); the lake turtle legend and the Sword Tower on the island are the most engaging story-hooks for younger family members

MORNING: FINAL MORNING - BEFORE DEPARTURE

The last morning in Vietnam is deliberately unscheduled. Use the time for a final walk, a last coffee, or simply watching the city at its own pace before your guide coordinates the airport transfer.

• Street breakfast before the journey home: phở or bánh mì tastes different when you know it is the last one for a while
• Last chance for any remaining shopping - Vietnamese coffee, silk, or lacquerware packs well and travels easily
• Airport transfer timed for international departures: immigration and security at Vietnamese airports can be slow at peak times - your guide will build in enough time
