Six days built around light rather than sights.
These terraces only look the way the photographs promise for a few weeks a year. Late May and early June the farmers flood them and whole valleys turn to mirrors. Mid-September to early October they go gold and are cut within days. Mu Cang Chai and Hoang Su Phi ripen on the same calendar, which is the only reason a single trip can hold both.
The rest follows from that. You are at Mam Xoi before first light because between six and nine the low sun rakes across the terraces and after that the haze arrives. You walk the Muong Hoa Valley rather than viewing it from a lay-by. And you spend two nights in Hoang Su Phi, a border district that never became a tourism showpiece, where the terraces are broader, the villages are further apart, and on most mornings you will be the only person at the viewpoint.

This is a loop across the top of Vietnam, linking the two great terrace landscapes of the northwest without doubling back. It runs 280km out of Hanoi through Nghia Lo and the Tu Le valley, over the Khau Pha Pass, into Mu Cang Chai and the hillside at Mam Xoi that most people have seen a photograph of without knowing where it was. It crosses the Hoang Lien Son range to Sapa and drops into the Muong Hoa Valley on foot. Then northeast to Hoang Su Phi, a border district of roughly 3,000 hectares of terraces cut into the mountains around three hundred years ago by La Chi, Dao and Nung families, and still farmed by them. The last leg is the long one, 290km back to Hanoi. The driving days are long by design. Out here the road is where most of the photographs are.
This 6-day Vietnam tour departs from Hanoi - Mu Cang Chai - Sapa - Bac Ha - Hoang Su Phi - Hanoi and covers Hanoi - Mu Cang Chai - Sapa - Bac Ha - Hoang Su Phi - Hanoi. This morning, start your excellent photography tour to the beautiful & untouched mountainous areas where you can see endless terraced rice fields. The best time for the trip is from Jul to Sep as the fields will be green in Jul & Aug, golden in Sep.

It is a long journey but You will make a nice stop in Nghia Lo to enjoy some first rice terraced fields.For any photographers who set foot for the first time, this town is itself an exciting place because of its mountainous topography. A scenic landscape will appear in front of your eyes: tea gardens and small streams come into view, an infinite green of trees, bushes and fresh air. Just more than one hour from Nghia Lo, you will have another stop at Tu Le Valley with the peaceful scenery of a prosperous countryside.
Before crossing the “horn of heaven” (Khau Pha Pass), Tu Le appears with a scent that offers lots of photo opportunities. If you come here in September, you will be immersed in the aroma of rice. There are also large streams providing irrigation for the whole region that is perfectly mixed with golden rice fields.
Finally, arrive in Mu Cang Chai in the late afternoon. Check in Mu Cang Chai Ecolodge and take a rest. If you are not tired and time permits, let's take your camera and hunt for sunset photos.

Experience with the Meetup Team was fabulous. Atmosphere was very warming and cheerful - wants you get to know that there is a whole team to guide you through the days of touring. The crowd size was small and very manageable. Staff were very helpful and solved all problems straight away - making sure you are enjoying your day ahead valued. Visited Sapa in July 2026, as it is a wedding anniversary holiday, we decided to get a travel agent to plan the whole trip for us. It was a 6D5N trip to Sapa and Hanoi. So Shirley planned the itinerary for us; 3N in Sapa and 2N in Hanoi, with visits to many attractions in Sapa based on our likes and dont..🤭. She is very accommodating to our requests and make amendments to the itinerary during our discussions and also make good recommendations: where to go in July, where to take nice pictures etc etc (and we really took many nice pictures throughout the trip). As weather in July is not ideal, there are places which she advised us against visiting so it will not be wasted trips…truthfully recommendations. Then there was Stella who briefed me through the whole itinerary before our trip so that we are well prepared and also things to look out for while in Sapa and Hanoi as we travelled without a tour guide. That was very helpful as it was our 1st time to Sapa and Hanoi. She also keep checking on us to make sure we were doing fine ourselves, we were at the right locations without any tour guides. The whole experience was seamless from the time we touched down at the airport to the bus journey to Sapa, our trips to all the recommended attractions to our way back to Hanoi and finally back home. During the whole trip it was fuss-free as everything was well arranged for us ie the drivers were on time to pick us and brought us around, the lunch arrangements and access to the attractions etc, it’s all so efficient…we really enjoyed the whole trip and was surprised that all went well with no hiccups 👍. The team did a fantastic job with all the arrangements that made it a delightful holiday for us!! Lastly, the price for the whole package is reasonable with excellent service!

Vietnam was absolutely beautiful, and the people were so warm, kind, and welcoming. 🇻🇳❤️ Booking through Meet Up Travel was also a different experience from the usual travel agency. From the very beginning, I shared my dietary requirements and made quite a number of changes to the itinerary, and they were always so accommodating and patient with all my requests. They even went through the entire itinerary carefully with us to make sure everything was well arranged and the trip would run as smoothly as possible. What I really appreciated was how they were always there whenever we had any questions or needed help. It genuinely felt like having a Vietnamese friend we could turn to throughout the trip someone who was just a message away and always ready to help. Thank you so much for organizing everything and making our trip such a smooth and enjoyable one!
