Seven days built around light rather than sights.

The terraces of Mu Cang Chai were cut by hand into mountainsides too steep for anything else, and they only look the way the photographs promise for a few weeks a year. Late May and early June the farmers flood them and the whole valley becomes a mirror. Late September and early October they turn gold and are cut within days. This trip goes in one of those two windows and nowhere else in between.

The rest follows the same logic. You are out before six at Mu Cang Chai because between six and nine the low sun rakes across the water and after that the haze arrives. You walk the Muong Hoa Valley instead of viewing it from a lay-by. You reach Bac Ha before the market fills. And you finish on Ha Long Bay, at anchor overnight, for the one morning of the week when the bay is quiet.

This is a loop through the northwest highlands with a night on the water at the end of it. It runs 280km out of Hanoi to Mu Cang Chai, over the Khau Pha Pass and into terraced country that Hmong families have been cutting into these slopes for more than twenty generations. It crosses the Hoang Lien Son range to Sapa and the Muong Hoa Valley, then north to the Bac Ha plateau for the Sunday market, the largest highland market in the region. Then back to Hanoi and out east to Ha Long Bay, where 1,969 limestone islands rise from the Gulf of Tonkin, for a single night aboard. The driving days are long by design. In this part of Vietnam the road is where most of the photographs are.

This morning, start your excellent photography tour to the beautiful & untouched mountainous areas where you can see endless terraced rice fields. The best time for the trip is from Jul to Sep as the fields will be green in Jul & Aug, golden in Sep.

08:00Meetup Travel's private tour guide and driver pick you up for a beautiful drive to Mu Cang Chai. It is a long journey but You will make a nice stop in Nghia Lo to enjoy some first rice terraced fields.

For any photographers who set foot for the first time, this town is itself an exciting place because of its mountainous topography. A scenic landscape will appear in front of your eyes: tea gardens and small streams come into view, an infinite green of trees, bushes and fresh air. Just more than one hour from Nghia Lo, you will have another stop at Tu Le Valley with the peaceful scenery of a prosperous countryside and visit Lim Mong village Before crossing the “horn of heaven” (Khau Pha Pass), Tu Le appears with a scent that offers lots of photo opportunities.

If you come here in September, you will be immersed in the aroma of rice. There are also large streams providing irrigation for the whole region that is perfectly mixed with golden rice fields. Finally, arrive in Mu Cang Chai in the late afternoon.

Check in Mu Cang Chai Ecolodge and take a rest. If you are not tired and time permits, let's take your camera and hunt for sunset photos. Have dinner and overnight in Mu Cang Chai.

Wonderful memories 😁

Meet up arranged my travel to Sapa - Hanoi last Sept 20 - 26. My experience was wonderful as they took care of everything w/c was mucg appreciated especially for a person with mobility problem like me (PWD). A limousine van was arranged to fetch me at Noi Bai Airport to Sapa. They assigned a wonderful tour guide for me,. What made it even better is that Krystal & Lynna & the rest of the team is always ready to assist me every time i need one. The tour they areanged gave me a very memorable one. We had a wonderful experience with meetup travel and a special thanks to Jasmine and Hazel for taking such good care of us throughout our trip. Everything was well organized and they were always helpful and responsive. We weren’t happy with our hotel in hanoi but when we shared our concerns they listened to us and arranged a change. The new hotel was much better, and we felt right at home there. We really appreciated how they made us feel comfortable and keep us stress free.

I booked a Ha Long Bay cruise tour for my family through Meetup Travel, and honestly, it was a 100/10 experience! I had the chance to meet Xeon in person, and he was such a sweetheart! 🥹 He’s enthusiastic, friendly, patient, and incredibly professional. He even took the time to help us plan our overall trip around Vietnam, despite the fact that I only booked the cruise through them and not the entire tour. Absolutely amazing Ninh Binh trip with Meetup Travel.

From the very first contact with Meetup travel I could tell I picked the right travel agency for my Ninh Bihn trip. The itinerary was planned with such detail and any questions I had for my group was answered right away by the Meetup team. Our driver was on time and the VIP limousine was amazing, our driver was very safe and friendly and our tour guide Po was truely amazing, he was very knowledgeable about the local history and spoke very well English and made our small group tour experience wonderful. We visited many temples and the ancient city and the history and culture of Ninh Binh far exceeded my expectations. Such a wonderful peaceful getaway from the city. Really slow pace where you can just enjoy the day and not have to worry about a single thing. For lunch we were taken to a beautiful lunch where we had endless options of local Ninh bihn dishes to try. They were very accommodating for the other guests special dietary needs and everything was amazing. After lunch we did an embroidery workshop that I absolutely loved "more then unanticipated even" was great to slow down and create something to take home to have the memories forever. The highlight of the trip for me personally war the boat tour to finish the day off. What an absolutely stunning boat trip! Words cannot describe what a perfect day Meetup travel pulled off for our personal Ninh Bihn group. Amazing team , will see you guys next year! Thanks Meetup Travel and especially Po!

Money well spent to save a lot of time and peace of mind

I had a wonderful experience with Meetup Travel. The time saved and the peace of mine maintained during my first trip to Vietnam were truly impressive. Meticulously planned, genuinely caring – highly recommend!

We just returned from a wonderful 10-day trip across Vietnam with Meetup Travel, covering Hanoi, Sapa, Ninh Binh, Da Nang and Hoi An. From the start, Yvonne and Danny understood our requirements really well, including our vegetarian and Jain dietary needs, and planned everything meticulously at the right price. Once the trip began, their team (Krystal, Chloe, Stella, Kim and others) was always there to make adjustments and resolve last-minute issues quickly. They genuinely cared and even arranged some lovely surprises for us along the way. The tour guides were amazing, and our guide in Sapa, Ms May Lan, was exceptional. Departures are Wednesday only. Bac Ha market trades on Sunday and there is no substitute for it, so the whole week is anchored to that one morning.

A good starting point if you are

Photographers, and travellers who understand that the best light happens at inconvenient hours. The itinerary is built around dawn windows rather than opening times, the guide moves you to vantage points by conditions rather than a fixed list, and the two peak terrace seasons are the whole point of the dates.

Say so early if you

This one covers ground. Several days involve four to five hours on mountain roads, and anyone prone to motion sickness on switchbacks will find that hard. If your priority is comfort and short transfers, a Sapa-only itinerary reaches similar landscapes with a fraction of the driving, and Meetup Travel is happy to build one.

The next step asks for real detail. Your dates, who is travelling, how you like to move, what you would change about this route. It takes a few minutes to fill in, because a local expert writes your itinerary from those answers rather than sending you a file. Nothing is booked or charged at this stage.

There are two peak windows. The water-pouring season runs from late May to early June, when farmers flood the terraces for planting and the slopes reflect the sky. The golden harvest runs from late September to early October, with mid to late September usually the strongest. Mu Cang Chai has only one rice crop per year, so there is no second golden season. Both windows last roughly two to three weeks and shift slightly with rainfall and local planting schedules. June to August is deep green, quieter and far cheaper, though it lacks the drama of either peak. Meetup Travel sets departures against reported field conditions rather than fixed calendar dates.
