Mu Cang Chai, Bac Ha & Ha Long Bay

Today is built around the light rather than a schedule. The Mu Cang Chai terraces are at their most dramatic between six and nine, when low sun rakes across the flooded paddies before the midday haze sets in, so you are out early and in position for it.

Your guide reads the morning and moves you to the vantage points that suit the season and the sky, whether the fields are mirror-bright with water in May and June or heavy and golden at harvest in September and October. When the best of the light has gone, the road takes over: a slow, scenic climb of roughly five hours through the Hoang Lien Son range to Sapa, the terraces of the morning still fresh in mind.

The switchback paddies of the Muong Hoa Valley climb from 900m to 1,400m, cut by hand over generations by Black Hmong and Red Dao families who still farm them today. Walking these trails feels less like sightseeing than like stepping inside a living painting.

The Muong Hoa Valley holds some of the most celebrated rice terraces in Vietnam, tier upon tier of paddies stacked across slopes between roughly 900m and 1,400m. They are the work of Black Hmong and Red Dao families whose ancestors first carved them into the hillsides generations ago, and they are still farmed the same way today. You spend the morning walking among them rather than looking on from a distant viewpoint, close enough to see the water channelled from one level to the next and the farmers at work in the fields. By afternoon you reach Topas Ecolodge, set on its own ridge with the valley falling away on every side.

Nam Cang wakes in the stillness only highland mornings bring: terraced slopes catching the first light, the valley below still under mist. This remote Red Dao village sits far from the crowds, and the road on to Bac Ha carries that quiet with it, climbing at last onto a plateau unlike anywhere you have been.

Nam Cang is a remote Red Dao village tucked into the hills south of Sapa, one of the quietest corners of the region and a fine place to be at first light, when the terraced slopes catch the early sun before it climbs too high. After time here you set off for Bac Ha, dropping through river valleys and climbing back up onto the Bac Ha plateau in the northeast of Lao Cai province. The landscape opens as you go, from the tight, forested valleys around Sapa to the broad highland country that Bac Ha is known for.

Your final morning is spent gliding back through the islands as the bay wakes. Ha Long stretches across some 1,550 km² of the Gulf of Tonkin and takes in around 1,969 named limestone islands and islets, shaped over millions of years into the forested towers the bay is famous for. Geologically it belongs to the same great karst family as Guilin in southern China, though rising straight from the sea gives Ha Long a character all its own. After a final meal on board you disembark and transfer back to Hanoi, where the tour comes to an end.
