Description

This 10-day overland journey takes you through the heart of northern and central Vietnam, moving at a pace that lets each destination breathe. From the tree-lined boulevards of Hanoi and the ancient royal capital of Hue to the marble-dusted coast of Da Nang and the glowing lantern streets of Hoi An, every stop on this route carries its own distinct character. You travel by iconic Reunification Express train, private van, sampan rowboat, and dragon boat - each mode of transport opening a different window onto the country's landscape and daily life.

Meetup Travel has designed this itinerary so that history, nature, and culture all sit in balance. Stand inside the Forbidden Purple City in Hue, trace the Cham legacy at My Son, haggle with silk merchants in Hoi An's ancient town, and learn to cook a Vietnamese feast using ingredients picked from a local market. Whether you are drawn by centuries of imperial drama or by the simple pleasure of floating a lantern on the Thu Bon River, this route delivers one of the most complete introductions to Vietnam you can find.

Itinerary

Welcome to Hanoi, Vietnam's northern capital and one of Southeast Asia's most atmospheric cities. After landing, your Meetup Travel representative will meet you at the airport and transfer you comfortably to your hotel in the Old Quarter, a tangle of ancient trade streets that has barely paused for breath in a thousand years.

The afternoon is yours to settle in and begin exploring at your own pace. The Old Quarter rewards slow wandering - each of its 36 streets was once dedicated to a single craft or trade, and many still are. Step outside and follow the sounds of motorbikes and street vendors, browse the open-fronted shops selling silk, lacquerware, and hand-stitched goods, or simply find a corner table at a bia hoi (fresh beer) stall and watch the city unfold around you.

  • Airport pick-up and hotel transfer included

  • Free time to explore the Old Quarter independently

  • Evening stroll along Hoan Kiem Lake recommended

  • Hotel check-in and welcome briefing on the journey ahead

Accomodations:Hanoi Old Quarter Hotel

Today is a full immersion in Hanoi's layered history. After breakfast, your guide leads you to the Temple of Literature, Vietnam's first university founded in 1070, where stone tortoise stelae carry the names of scholars who passed imperial exams centuries ago. The silence inside the walled complex feels like a gift in a city that rarely stops moving.

Next, visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex and the surrounding Ba Dinh Square, where the nation's independence was declared in 1945. Nearby, the One Pillar Pagoda rises from a lotus pond on a single stone column - one of the most photographed images in all of Vietnam. The afternoon brings you deep into the spirit of the Old Quarter's 36 trade streets, where the narrow lanes of Hang Gai, Hang Bac, and Hang Ma reward unhurried exploration.

  • Temple of Literature and Confucian courtyard tour
  • Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex and One Pillar Pagoda
  • Guided walk through the 36 streets of the Old Quarter
  • Evening at Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple

Highlights

Hanoi wears its thousand-year history on its sleeve - from Confucian courtyards at the Temple of Literature to the tangled silk-and-spice lanes of the Old Quarter.

Meals Included:Breakfast

An early departure brings you south to Ninh Binh, a province of green rice fields threaded through karst limestone peaks so dramatic they earned the name "Ha Long Bay on land." Your first stop is Hoa Lu, the 10th-century capital of Vietnam, where two ancient temples honour the Dinh and Le emperors who first unified this land. The stonework and carved dragons here speak of a civilisation already mature when most of the world was still medieval.

From Hoa Lu, you board a traditional sampan for the Tam Coc rowboat journey - a 90-minute drift through flooded rice paddies and three cave tunnels carved by the Ngo Dong River. Your rowers navigate by foot, leaving their hands free and giving you the full spectacle of karst walls rising sheer from the water. The afternoon rewards the energetic with a climb to Mua Cave viewpoint, where 500 stone steps lead to a panorama that puts the whole valley in frame. Return to Hanoi by evening.

  • Hoa Lu ancient capital - Dinh and Le dynasty temples
  • Tam Coc rowboat through rice paddies and river caves
  • Mua Cave hilltop panorama (optional climb)
  • Local lunch included in Ninh Binh

Highlights

The sampan glides through the flooded valley at Tam Coc almost without a sound, limestone peaks towering on both sides as the boat slips into the cool dark of river caves.

Meals Included:Breakfast, Lunch

Today the journey itself becomes the destination. After breakfast and hotel checkout, you transfer to Hanoi station to board the Reunification Express - the legendary train that has stitched together Vietnam's north and south since 1936. The rail line to Hue hugs the coastline for long stretches, rolling past paddy fields, red-roofed villages, and the glittering South China Sea in a sequence of landscapes that no aircraft window could ever match.

This is one of the great slow-travel experiences in Southeast Asia: bring a book, order a Vietnamese coffee from the trolley, and let the hours unfold. As you descend into central Vietnam the temperature softens and the architecture shifts - French colonial tiles give way to imperial yellow walls. Hue announces itself quietly, the Perfume River appearing below the train windows before the city takes shape around it. Your driver meets you at Hue station for a comfortable transfer to your boutique hotel in the city centre.

  • Morning checkout and transfer to Hanoi train station
  • Scenic train ride south through coastal Vietnam
  • Coastal and mountain scenery throughout the journey
  • Arrival in Hue and hotel check-in by evening

Highlights

The Reunification Express rolls south through a procession of fishing villages and bright green paddies, the South China Sea flickering silver through the carriage window.

Itinerary photo 1

Accomodations:Hue Boutique Hotel

Meals Included:Breakfast

Hue was the seat of Vietnam's last imperial dynasty for over 140 years, and today you step inside the city that the Nguyen emperors built. The Imperial Citadel spreads across 520 hectares of moated walls, pavilions, and ceremonial gates painted in the dynasty's signature yellow and red. Within it, the Forbidden Purple City - the emperor's innermost sanctuary - gives a sense of the extraordinary privilege and isolation of royal life in 19th-century Vietnam.

After lunch, you board a traditional dragon boat on the Perfume River for a gentle upstream journey to Thien Mu Pagoda, Hue's most recognisable landmark. The seven-storey octagonal tower has stood on its riverbank hilltop since 1601, and the surrounding monastery garden is fragrant with frangipani and quiet with monks. The boat ride there and back is the best way to see the river as Hue has always seen it - wide, slow, and lined with gardens that slope down to the water's edge.

  • Imperial Citadel and Ngo Mon Gate guided tour
  • Forbidden Purple City inner palace complex
  • Dragon boat cruise on the Perfume River
  • Thien Mu Pagoda and monastery garden

Highlights

Inside the Forbidden Purple City, yellow-walled courtyards open one into another under a sky that feels very wide and very quiet, the weight of Nguyen dynasty history settling around you like incense smoke.

Itinerary photo 1

Accomodations:Hue Boutique Hotel

Meals Included:Breakfast, Lunch

The morning takes you into the forested hills south of Hue, where the Nguyen emperors built their eternal residences with the same ambition they brought to everything else. Minh Mang's tomb is a masterpiece of symmetry - pavilions, lotus ponds, and courtyards arranged along a single axial path through pine-shaded grounds. Tu Duc's tomb, by contrast, reflects a more melancholic emperor: a lake, a theatre, a library, and a garden designed for poetry-writing and quiet retreat during his lifetime.

After the tombs, your private vehicle climbs the famous Hai Van Pass - the "Pass of Ocean Clouds" - where the road crests the Truong Son mountain spur at over 490 metres. The view from the top takes in the entire curve of Da Nang Bay to the south, the South China Sea blazing blue on both sides of the ridge. Few drives in Vietnam match this one for drama. You descend into Da Nang with the afternoon light behind you, check into your hotel, and find the city's long white beach waiting just minutes away.

  • Minh Mang Royal Tomb - symmetric gardens and pavilions
  • Tu Duc Royal Tomb - lake, poetry garden, and theatre
  • Hai Van Pass scenic mountain crossing
  • Arrival in Da Nang and hotel check-in

Highlights

Standing on the summit of Hai Van Pass with Da Nang Bay curving below in both directions, the scale of Vietnam's coastline becomes something you feel rather than just see.

Itinerary photo 1

Accomodations:Da Nang Hotel

Meals Included:Breakfast

Da Nang reveals its layered character this morning. Five marble outcrops rise without warning from the flat coastal plain south of the city - the Marble Mountains - each named for a natural element and riddled with Buddhist shrines, stalactite caves, and hidden pagodas. Thuy Son, the largest, rewards a climb through its steep stone stairways with the Huyen Khong cave: a vast cathedral chamber where shafts of light fall through roof openings onto ancient altars below.

Back on the coast road, the iconic white figure of Lady Buddha at Son Tra Peninsula comes into view - at 67 metres, one of the tallest statues in Vietnam, visible from the sea and from most of Da Nang's beaches. After a seafood lunch near the waterfront, you continue south along the shore to Hoi An, just 30 kilometres away but a world apart in atmosphere. The ancient trading port greets you with bougainvillea-draped walls, flickering lanterns, and the amber light that has made it one of the most-photographed towns in Asia. Check in and take the evening at your own pace.

  • Marble Mountains - Huyen Khong cave and hilltop pagodas
  • Lady Buddha statue at Son Tra Peninsula viewpoint
  • Coastal transfer to Hoi An Ancient Town
  • Free evening to explore Hoi An independently

Highlights

The Huyen Khong cave inside Marble Mountains opens into a chamber so large that natural light pours through roof holes like cathedral rays, incense and silence filling the space between stone Buddhas and stalactites.

Itinerary photo 1

Accomodations:Hoi An Hotel

Meals Included:Breakfast, Lunch

Hoi An's Ancient Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that earns its status without effort - the streets have remained largely unchanged since the 16th century, when Japanese, Chinese, and Dutch merchants moored here and built the trading port that made the town rich. Today the architecture reflects all of them: sweeping curved rooftops from Fujian, French shutters painted yellow, and the narrow Japanese merchant houses where silk bolts were weighed and traded.

Your morning guide walk covers the Japanese Covered Bridge (built in 1593 and still standing), the Phung Hung Old House, the Chinese assembly halls with their incense-wreathed altars, and the tailor quarter where skilled seamstresses can produce a custom-fitted garment in 24 hours - a Hoi An tradition worth taking advantage of. The afternoon is free to browse Nguyen Thai Hoc Street's galleries and ceramic shops, or simply sit by the Thu Bon River over a glass of white rose dumplings and cold lemonade. After dinner, the town transforms: coloured lanterns reflect in the river and the narrow streets fill with the quiet magic that defines Hoi An after dark.

  • Guided walk through Hoi An Ancient Town
  • Japanese Covered Bridge and Phung Hung Old House
  • Chinese Assembly Hall and merchant quarter
  • Evening lantern walk along the Thu Bon River

Highlights

Hoi An Ancient Town is at its most enchanting at dusk, when silk lanterns in every colour ignite above the Thu Bon River and the streets fill with a warm amber glow that no photographer has ever quite captured.

Itinerary photo 1

Accomodations:Hoi An Hotel

Meals Included:Breakfast

Your final full day balances two very different but equally absorbing experiences. The morning begins at a local market-to-table cooking class: your chef guide leads you through Hoi An's central market, pointing out the fresh herbs, banana blossoms, and river fish that define central Vietnamese cuisine, then takes you to a riverside kitchen where you learn to prepare two or three classic dishes - White Rose dumplings, Cao Lau noodles, and fresh spring rolls are typical choices. You eat what you cook for lunch.

The afternoon takes you inland to My Son Sanctuary, a valley of ancient Hindu towers built between the 4th and 14th centuries by the Cham civilisation that once dominated central Vietnam. Despite bomb damage from the war, the jungle-ringed ruins retain tremendous atmosphere: moss-covered brick towers, carved stone linga, and intricate bas-reliefs of Shiva and Vishnu peer out from beneath the tree canopy. A local guide brings the history alive, explaining the Cham maritime kingdom that traded sandalwood and silk across Southeast Asia for a thousand years. Return to Hoi An by late afternoon for a final evening at leisure.

  • Morning market tour and hands-on Vietnamese cooking class
  • Lunch of dishes prepared in class
  • My Son Cham sanctuary guided tour
  • Free final evening in Hoi An

Highlights

Learning to fold a White Rose dumpling in a Hoi An riverside kitchen, ingredients chosen an hour earlier at the market, is the kind of hands-on memory that outlasts most souvenirs.

Your 10-day journey through northern and central Vietnam comes to a close today. After breakfast at the hotel, take a final slow walk through Hoi An's morning streets before your Meetup Travel driver arrives to transfer you to Da Nang International Airport for your onward flight. The transfer takes approximately 30 minutes from the Ancient Town.

Before you leave, the memories are already stacking up: the karst silence of Tam Coc, the yellow walls of Hue's Forbidden City, the cloud-view from Hai Van Pass, the lanterns of Hoi An multiplied in the Thu Bon River. This route through Vietnam is one of the most complete cultural journeys in Southeast Asia, and Meetup Travel is glad to have been part of it. Safe travels, and we hope to welcome you back on your next adventure in Vietnam.

Awesome trip to Vietnam Hanoi/Halong Bay/Sapa by Rosie and Krystal

Was just browsing which country to go for this school holiday and meetup travel popped up on my IG. Didn’t heard of it before from any friends so initially was quite skeptical about it. Especially when we have a group of 17 people with a large deposit amount to make. But travel consultant, Rosie kept finding ways to assure us and proof that they are not scammers. Haha. Story short, my first time to Vietnam planned by her and Krystal was superb. It was really nicely done up and follow up was very responsive too. Most importantly, all of us really enjoyed ourselves and had a wonderful and pleasant trip! Will look up for them again when we plan to visit other parts of Vietnam! cheers!

Sapa Magic with Meetup!

Meetup Travel is unique. Jasmine talked to me face-to-face online 2 times before we confirm the trip to Sapa. Usually, travel agencies only send the itinerary but Meetup has agents to customize the tour package, talking to you. Jasmine is very friendly and interesting to talk to. She understands the needs and wishes of customers. In the advent of artificial intelligence, Jasmine makes customers feel human and cared for. The limousine van was comfortable with several stops for toilet breaks and food/drinks. Hanoi to Sapa is about 6 to 7 hours away. The Sapa tour packages were well-organized with a local tour guide, Vang. He takes good photographs with his professional camera. Which tour agent provides such a service? You have to pay a lot of money for a professional photographer to go along with you. And not all tour guides can take good photographs for you and your family, patiently and with many poses. We recommend you to have a private tour if photographs are important to you. As we have a toddler, private tours maximize your comfort and enjoyment of the tour. Vang is also kind and attentive to your wishes. Meetup Travel agents also communicate often with us. Chloe also briefed us before the tour to ensure we knew what to do during the tours. And Chloe and her team of agents never fails to make us feel like family in a group chat. We talked often about the tours and raised problems to them. They replied within seconds! Usually, tour agents don’t talk to you after payment, only the tour guide brings you around. Hence, Meetup Travel is a very different kind of travel agencies that you can’t find easily. Just pay a little more and you are provided with 5-star service and attention! You have paid so much money on your tour package. Why not pay a little more to have a perfect holiday experience?

An unforgettable Honeymoon experience

If you’re hesitant about booking with them, don’t be. This was hands down one of the best travel experiences we’ve ever had, and a huge part of that was because of Stella, Ted, and Kaitlyn. From the very beginning, they were professional, responsive, knowledgeable, and genuinely cared about making sure our trip was exactly what we wanted. We just returned from an incredible 10-day HONEYMOON trip through Vietnam, including Sapa, Ha Long Bay and our cruise, Ninh Binh, Da Nang, Hoi An and the Lantern Festival. Every detail was thoughtfully planned and organized, allowing us to enjoy the experience without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. The itinerary flowed perfectly and gave us plenty of time to truly appreciate each destination. What impressed us most was how easy they made everything. Airport transfers, fast-track services, eSIM setup, domestic flights, hotel arrangements, tours, and transportation were all handled seamlessly. Anytime we had a question or needed help, they responded quickly. If they didn’t already have an answer, they went out of their way to find one. Traveling in a foreign country can sometimes be stressful, but having a team like this behind you gives you complete peace of mind. They made the entire process smooth, enjoyable, and worry-free from start to finish. We couldn’t recommend Stella, Ted, and Kaitlyn more highly and her team who helped them out when they couldn’t respond. If you’re considering a trip to Vietnam, do yourself a favor and book with them. You’ll be glad you did The trip exceeded our expectations in every way, and we made memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you for helping make it so special

The Best, Well Organized, Professional, Friendly travel agency you can get in Vietnam

Our choice of Hanoi for our Rotary strategic planning was a great choice. Meetup travel took care of all our needs from the time of inquiry, arrival, meeting, to our tour proper. Henry, Stella and the rest of the team were so helpful. They made sure everything we needed for our meeting was available. Our customized tour was so good, everyone was all smiles. Our trip to Halong Bay was memorable because of a very professional and witty guide named Tiger. Out mid trip changes were likewise accommodated. Surely this experience will make us want to come back to Vietnam.

Solo travel to Tà Xùa

Booked through Meetup for my trip to Tà Xùa from Hà Nội. Hazel and Rosie were incredibly helpful with their prompt replies for every question I had. They would also check in with you while you’re on the way to your destination. Everything was arranged quite well. Itinerary sent to you directly for the trip you’re making. However, there’s a little room for improvement for the team at MeetUp and that’s the coordination between the team and the drivers (at the destination) and the hotel or homestay staff at the destination (for both arrival and departure). All information should be prearranged, collected beforehand and given to the guest at earliest possible time to avoid any confusion or misunderstanding. Other than that, the trip was rewarding experience overall thanks to Hazel, Rosie and the rest of the team! 🤘🏽

Great Experience with MeetUp Travel for Vietnam

Just happened to see their posts in Instagram while searching for things to do in Vietnam for our trip. I sent a short message to ask about their services and Jeannie reached out and gave us the information and walked us through the tours they’ve provided other travelers. So glad we asked them to help with planning our trip; Krystal was the one who handled the planning of whole trip walking us through the proposed itinerary, asking us for feedback on what we want to experience and the food requirements. We had a great time in Da Nang and Hanoi. The time in Ba Na Hills and the beaches in Da Nang were just amazing; we loved whiling our time drinking our guava juice and eating authentic hot stone pho noodles that tasted absolutely awesome. It was such a breeze as they took care of all booking for the hotels, all activities and the inter-island flight. Spared me the hassle of looking for good hotels and lining in long lines for the activities in Ba Na Hills and Vinwonder. The fast pass they gifted us was such a blessing. Everything were planned so well all we needed to do was just enjoy the experience. Our e-sims were also handled by the team which was also a gift. Krystal walked us through the before and after getting to Vietnam. Everyday was coordinated and planned so well it exceeded our expectations. No issue with transportation and tours as we had our very own tour guides. All in all, we wouldn’t have had such an amazing time in Vietnam without the MeetUp team. Thanks for the great experience! Kudos to Jeannie and Krystal. Thanks so much for the freebies and kind gestures. We’ve made good friends in MeetUp. Til our next trip.

Just wanted to say the biggest thank you to Bichann and Chloe as well as the rest of the Meetup Travel team for all the support during our family’s trip to Hanoi and Sapa. Your constant communication and dedication made our trip seemless and resolved all issues that arose as soon as possible.
