Ho Chi Minh City night markets: Where to go

By HynneeSep 17, 20269 min read

Yes, Ho Chi Minh City has night markets, but not where most guides point you. The covered hall at Ben Thanh shuts at 18:00. The night market is the stalls that go up on the streets outside it, and the one Saigon locals go to for dinner is somewhere else entirely.

What follows is the walking version, which is how most people do it. There is also the version where someone else drives and orders: an evening food ride by vintage Vespa covers the same hours, 18:00 to 21:30, and finishes at a rooftop bar.

Ben Thanh: The hall and the street are different

Two things share the name, and they keep different hours. The covered hall, in the area travelers still commonly call District 1, trades roughly 06:00 to 18:00: food products, clothing, household goods, souvenirs. After it shuts, vendors set up on Phan Boi Chau and Phan Chu Trinh, the streets flanking it, and in front of the north gate. Those stalls build from about 19:00 and run to around 23:00, later at weekends.

Those are the hall's published hours, the same ones Vietnam Airlines lists in its Ben Thanh travel guide. What no listing tells you is that the two halves never overlap. The hall is locking up while the street outside is unpacking.

Between 20:00 and 22:30 everything is open at once. That is the window, and it is the same one at every night market in Saigon. Arrive at 18:30 and you will watch people unpacking. The north gate is the easiest thing to name to a driver and the easiest place to find each other again.

Prices split the same way the market does. Food at the street stalls runs about 30,000 to 120,000 VND a plate, roughly $1 to $5, and a plate of grilled seafood 50,000 to 150,000 VND, about $2 to $6 (checked Sep 2026). Those numbers are stated, not bargained. The souvenir and clothing stalls are the opposite: the first number is an opening bid, and it is aimed at you.

Ho Thi Ky: Food until 23:00, flowers all night

When a Saigon local says night market and means dinner, this is the one. Ho Thi Ky is two markets in one lane, on different clocks. The food street runs about 15:00 to 23:00. The wholesale flower market behind it trades around the clock, busiest in the small hours when growers unload for the morning sellers.

Dinner means arriving by 19:00, ahead of the queues. Flowers, and the sight of a market working at 02:00, means coming after the food stalls pack down. You will not catch both at their best in one visit.

The flower trade runs on its own clock, busiest in the hours the food stalls are shut.

It is also cheap in a way Ben Thanh is not. Grilled skewers start at 10,000 VND, banh trang nuong comes off the charcoal at 15,000 to 20,000 VND, and 150,000 to 200,000 VND, about $6 to $8, buys a full graze for one person (checked Sep 2026). The lane is narrow, the plastic stools wobble on uneven concrete, and the smell changes every few metres: charcoal, then fish sauce, then the cold green scent of cut stems drifting out of the flower stalls behind you.

To eat with someone who knows which stall is which, the evening foodie tour by motorbike sets off at 17:30 and runs about four hours across 10 to 12 tastings.

Hanh Thong Tay: Clothes, not dinner

Hanh Thong Tay on Quang Trung is a clothing market with a night shift: day 04:00 to 18:00, evening 18:00 to 23:00. It sits roughly 8 km north of central Saigon in Go Vap, 25 to 30 minutes by car in evening traffic, so it is a trip of its own rather than a stop on the way to something else.

Many stalls mark their prices rather than negotiate, though that is stall by stall, not a rule. Come for cheap fashion and eat before you arrive.

Clothing markets keep a night shift of their own. The food here is a cart, not a kitchen.

Binh Tay is not a night market

Binh Tay gets listed with the others and does not belong there. It is a daytime wholesale market in Cho Lon, about 5 km west of Ben Thanh in what travelers still call District 6, so it belongs to a morning, not an evening. Go with the surrounding streets of herbs, roast meat and coffee in mind.

VinWonders puts it in the same bracket, a daytime market rather than an evening one. The wholesale floor works to a morning clock, so by the hour the stalls at Ben Thanh are lighting up, Binh Tay is done for the day.

Is the Ben Thanh night market worth it?

For one evening, yes, as long as you know what it is. It is the most central night market in the city, it is easy to walk, and the grills on Phan Boi Chau are genuinely good at what they do. What it is not is cheap, and it is not where Saigon eats.

Make it the easy first night: eat two plates, buy nothing you have not priced twice, and save Ho Thi Ky for the second evening, once you have your bearings and know what 20,000 VND should buy.

One evening in Saigon only: eat at Ho Thi Ky from 19:00, then take the 10 minute ride back to the Ben Thanh streets before 22:30. The timings line up. Skip it if you actually want to shop, because by then the covered hall has been shut four hours.

Before you go

Carry small notes. Cash moves fastest, and domestic QR transfers are common between Vietnamese customers and vendors, but do not count on an international card. Ask the price before you pick anything up, keep your bag in front of you in the narrow lanes, and do not leave a phone on the table while you eat.

Work out how you are getting home before you go out. Metro Line 1 terminates under Ben Thanh, which makes it the easy way in, but the last trains leave around 22:00 Monday to Thursday and around 23:00 Friday to Sunday (checked Sep 2026), so the line closes while the market is still trading. A ride-hail bike back across the centre takes about 10 minutes at that hour and is the fallback everyone uses.

Dress for heat that does not drop much after dark. Saigon evenings stay heavy. Evening temperatures in the city sit around 27C for most of the year, and the lane at Ho Thi Ky has no breeze in it at all.
