Hanoi → Ha Giang City

Departures are built around Saturday night, because the Bac Ha market runs on Sunday morning only and that market is the reason most people take this route. Other departure days are possible and still visit Bac Ha town, Hoang A Tuong Palace and the villages nearby, but the market itself will be closed. Ha Giang has no airport and no railway station, so arrange your onward transport to Hanoi at the same time as the tour.

Hanoi→Lao Cai →Bac Ha→Si Ma Cai→Suoi Thau Grassland→Xin Man (Coc Pai)→Chieu Lau Thi→Ban Phung→Nam Hong→Nam Khoa→Ha Giang City

This is a west to east traverse along the Chinese border, not a loop, which is why it does not double back on itself. You arrive by overnight train at Lao Cai, climb to the Bac Ha plateau at 1,000 m, run north through the border district of Si Ma Cai, cross into Xin Man for the grassland at Suoi Thau, then drop into Hoang Su Phi for the summit at Chieu Lau Thi and the terraces at Ban Phung, Nam Hong and Nam Khoa. Driving days stay at 3 to 4 hours because the train removes the long approach at the start. The route finishes at Ha Giang city, which is where the Dong Van loop begins if you want to keep going north.

This 5-day private tour crosses northern Vietnam from Bac Ha to the rice terraces of Hoang Su Phi, following a mountain route that most travellers never see. After the overnight train from Hanoi to Lao Cai, travel through Bac Ha, Si Ma Cai and Xin Man to Suoi Thau Grassland, Chieu Lau Thi and the terraced villages of Ban Phung, Nam Hong and Nam Khoa.

The roads are rougher and the stays simpler than in Sapa, but that is also why the route feels different. You travel with your own driver and English-speaking guide, stop when you want for photographs, walk through local villages and spend two nights in homestays among the rice fields. During the golden harvest season, when rooms in Hoang Su Phi are limited, your stays are arranged in advance so you can focus on the journey rather than the logistics.

Meetup Travel - Highly recommended!

Vietnam ‘26

Our trip will definitely be one of my highlights for this year! We booked a 4 nights in Sa pa and 4 nights in Hanoi. Due to our stay in Hanoi being a DIY, I would have to say I enjoyed our adventure in Sa Pa more. Although the weather was on the gloomier side, it was an experience that I very much enjoyed (minus the getting drenched part). Meetup Travel really met up our expectations when it came to communications. Ali and Hazel were very approachable and were flexible when it came to sudden changes in the plans. I also enjoyed the little event they prepared for me :> P.S. Ask for Lan as a tour guide in Sa Pa. She’s very down-to-earth and overall professional 🫶🏼

Highly recommended if you want a seamless itinerary! Friendly and capable team!

The team was very prompt and friendly, and Ms. Kim kept checking on us the whole time we were at Ba Na Hills for our day trip. They made everything a lot more effortless for us, from the hotel pick-up to our VIP pass tickets, all the way to dropping us off back at our hotel. The included lunch buffet was also quite delicious, and our tour guide Ms. Anh was so patient the whole time, taking our photos and even carrying one of our bags when we went on the alpine coaster (a must-try)! I highly recommend MeetUp Vietnam, especially if you’re traveling with family and want a specific itinerary.

Seamless Vacation

We were 5 older girlfriends who decided to visit Hoi An from Aug. 25-30, 2026. I came across Henry of MeetUp Travel and decided to book our airport transfers and tours with them. Needless to say, it was the right decision. They made me a detailed IT, met online with us prior to our travel to discuss details and most importantly were always reachable via Whats app. They readily answered our questions, gave good suggestions on where to eat, have clothes made and even located the nearest hospital when my friend wanted to buy some medicines. Our transfers and tours were excellent. They took away the worries of daily coordination and planning and all we had to do was enjoy our vacation.

Good trip with big group!

We just returned from an unforgettable 22-day trip through Vietnam — Hanoi, Da Nang, Phú Quốc, and Ho Chi Minh City — organized by Meetup Vietnam, and we couldn’t be happier with how everything came together. Amazing Vietnam trip!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Truly Memorable Vietnam Experience with Meetup Travel We had such a wonderful experience with Meetup Travel during our Vietnam holiday, and we are especially grateful to Hazel, Krystal, and Phoenix for making the entire trip so smooth, comfortable, and memorable. Phoenix did an excellent job coordinating everything for us — from our stay and sightseeing in Hanoi, to our travel arrangements to Da Nang, and our beautiful Lan Ha Bay cruise booking. Everything was handled efficiently and thoughtfully, which meant we could simply enjoy the holiday without worrying about the logistics. A very special mention to Hazel and Krystal, who went beyond just helping us with our travel arrangements. It was so lovely to finally meet them in person in Hanoi. Before we left for Dubai, they actually took the time to come and meet us and say goodbye, which was such a thoughtful and personal gesture. They also surprised us with the sweetest little Vietnamese coffee souvenirs to take home. It was such a simple but incredibly thoughtful touch, and it really showed the warmth and care they put into looking after their guests. We came away feeling that we had not just dealt with a travel company, but with people who genuinely cared about making our trip special. Excellent Vietnam Experience with Meetup Travel - Highly Recommended!

  • You judge a trip by what you saw, not by the room you slept in. This route trades polish for access: mountain roads the tour coaches do not use, introductions your guide has already made, and viewpoints you will often have entirely to yourself. It suits people willing to build their dates around the landscape rather than the other way round, and anyone who has done Sapa and wants that scenery without queueing to photograph it.

  • Comfort is uneven here by design rather than by accident, and the standard on the second half is not something money moves. The shape of each day answers to the road and to the weather, not to a schedule. If predictability matters more to you than location, or if switchbacks genuinely do not agree with you, Sapa offers similar scenery on far shorter transfers and Meetup Travel will build that instead. It is also a poor fit for a decide-as-you-go holiday, because the only departures worth taking are pinned to the farming calendar.
